WVP Kenya

Where we work

We began our work in the Bondo district, but have since expanded, and we now work in a total of two sub-countries, all of which are in Western Kenya. The sub-counties in which we are active are Siaya and Lugari. Lugari is in Western province, while Siaya is in Nyanza province. Our programmes in Siaya are implemented by the Community Aid Capacity Oriented Programme (CACOP) who has an office in Bondo, while our programmes in Lugari are implemented by Khuyanzane who has an office in Lumakanda.

The sub-counties in which we work are some of the poorest in Kenya and have some of the highest HIV prevalance rates found in Kenya. The overall prevalence of HIV and AIDS in Western Kenya continues to be twice the national average and flucturates between 12-24% (compared to 0.2% in the UK). Sick parents cannot sustain their families and children are taken out of school to take over the responsibilities of their parents. Besides HIV and AIDS, malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory diseases that continue to be real threats to many children in the area. People often have to walk for hours to get to a medical health facility, which is often understaffed and lack medicines and other equipment.
