WVP Kenya

mihani widows and orphans group

Women of all ages make up Mihani Widows and Orphans group, and they never fail to bring a smile to our face.
Founded: 2003
No. of members: 60
No of children supported by WVP Kenya: 71
District: Bondo
There really is never a dull moment to be had when working with these ladies - especially now that they are using and hiring out three oxen and plough sets and farming on community land, not to mention the 71 goats that we have bought for each of the vulnerable children they are supporting. The group's oxen and plough set initiative is a perfect example of how helping the children can also help the community. Not only are the children benefiting from the money the initiative is creating, but local farmers are reaping better harvests due to the increased productivity they get from using the oxen and plough. Not content with all of this, we have been informed that plans are afoot for the group to diversify into a new activity to be able to provide the children with even higher support levels than they are currently receiving.

As they are a large group of sixty women, we have no dout they have the capacity for this - we are just exicted to hear what it is going to be! As well as having over 50 children from the wider Mihani area on our scholarship programme, we have also been involved in constructing a medical centre in Mihani since October of 2008. This centre will provide over 4,000 people with access to medical facilities that otherwise were over 10 kilometres away; too far away for many to walk and too expensive for many to travel with public transport. Having completed a pharmacy at the site, we are currently in the middle of building a treatment room which will provide access to diagnosis and treatment for the majority of diseases and illnesses which afflict the area.
