Lela community groupLela are one of the earliest communities we became involved with, having worked closely with a group of caregiving children since March 2007

Founded: 2001 No. of members: 30 No of children supported by WVP Kenya: 40 District: Bondo |
These children have assumed the roles of caring for their ailing or ageing guardians. Our programme with these children involved training them in project management skills, preparing and assisting them in writing a project proposal, and setting up a project management committee. The children decided to sell maize at the local market, successfully negotiated access to a storage facility in the market centre and had their caregivers selling the maize whilst they attended school.

As well as being able to care for and provide for their sick parents or siblings, they have also shown themselves to be more than capable on the sports field. Lela F.C tends to dominate when it comes to football, and the senior boys and girls picked up the trophy in their respective competitions at our last tournament. The Man Utd of Bondo district!
At the start of 2009 two children from Lela joined our scholarship programme, both beginning in Form One attending Got Matar secondary school which is near enough to home for them not to go to boarding school.
