community capacity support programme for orphaned childrenThe overall aim of this project is to strenghten the efforts of six poor communities in providing community-based orphan care. The project is designed to allow the communities decide who will benefit, what activities will be carried out and how the resources they generate from their activities will be distributed.
| Duration: April 2008 - April 2012 Donor: Wereldkinderen and Liberty Foundation Budget: £42,500 Beneficiaries: 450 orphans and 200 elderly guardians |
Our role is to work with the communities and facilitate their capacity building in a way that they can implement their planned activities successfully. We do this through a process of firstly training the guardians on child-care strategies, the rights of the child and caring for children in difficult circumstances. This is to sensitise the communities to thinking about how they can provide the best care for the children. This is followed by training sessions on project and financial management, leadership and proposal writing. This is to increase the knowledge of the group and prepare them to set up and run a business that will provide the most benefit to the children.

Following the training, groups are asked to work together to prepare a proposal to set up a project that will provide the most benefit for the children they have identified to be in need of support. Following an approval process (granting the communities an initial Ksh350,000), we help the communities with the implementation of these activities and monitor the positive impact that these activities haveon the lives of the children and the community as a whole. We refer to this participatory process as community-based capital cash transfer.
The communities we work with in this project are Bidii, Milimani, Agola, Mihani, Migono and Ritongima. Up until today, they are at different stages of the project. Some have received both of their cash transfers, others have only received on (we are awaiting the second proposal) and Ritongima, which has only just been admitted to the programme, is still to have its first cash transfer.
- Agola have received 2 oxen and plough sets, 62 goats, and have been allocated land on which a shop has been constructed.
- Mihani have received 3 oxen and plough sets, 71 goats, and maize seeds and fertiliser to begin an agricultural enterprise
- Bidii have received 30 goats and 100 chairs and a marquee to hire out for local events
- Milimani have received 75 goats and 100 chairs and a marquee to hire out for local event.
- Migono have received a mill to grind maize and the construction of a shop from which to sell this
