Our social protection for oprhans and vulnerable children programme was developed in response tot he extreme, yet varying needs of the families and communities in Western Kenya. This is due to high levels of disease and poverty which put a great deal of pressure on family and community units.

Duration: October 2006 - on going
                                                                        Donor: Individual donors
                                                                        Budget: £4,000
Beneficiaries: 65 children and 12 households
It is against this background that realised the need to develop a flexible programme that provides context specific support to children in difficult circumstances. This allows us to address the risks, vulnerability and chronic poverty through social transfers. We have distributed over 100 goats through this programme to vulnerable families in an effort to boost their household economy. We have also constructed and repaired a number of houses under this scheme.  We found a number of children getting sick from the leaking roofs and unable to study as the wind would blow out their kerosene lamps.
                                                                        Picture
Through this scheme we have also contributed towards the medical health care of a number of children. These treatments range from basic treatment of diseases such as malaria to treatment of complications following an abortion. We spend an average of £10 on each medical emergency, so you see, a little bit of money can make a real life saving difference.

We have also contributed towards funerals. The financial burden of a parental death can bring children into further destitution. Despite the contribution of many community and extended family members, we have on occasions found it necessary to provide a contribution to funerals. Our spending on this averages out to about £30 on each funeral.

We can construct a new house for only £500, buy a child a goat for only £20 and treat another child from a life-threatning disease for only  £10. Please do support our efforts to help individual children and their families.
