WVP Kenya

bidii widows and orphans group

When we heard there was a local organisation contributing their own time and money to run an AIDS awareness and counselling programme, we knew they were a group we just had to find out more about. And find out more we did!

Founded: 2006
No. of members: 30
No of children supported by WVP Kenya: 67
District: Bondo
Not only were Bidii Widows and Orphans Group running an AIDS awareness and counselling programme, they were also doing poultry farming and using the income generated to support children in the community. Impressed? We certainly were. So, back in July of 2008, after a series of training workshops on proposal writing, book keeping and project management, the group sumitted a proposal to WVP Kenya for a marquee and chairs. Their intention was to hire out the marquee and chairs at local events such as celebrations and funerals. They also asked for a goat for each of the 67 children they are supporting, which we gave them. The group have been managing their initiative since the end of 2008, and have made a steady income from this.

Meet the Bidii group
They have been able to support vulnerable children within their community through the payment of school fees, the purchases of school materials, paying medical costs and providing them with crayons and drawing paper. Bidii has also put forward a number of the most vulnerable children living within their community that we are not sponsoring through our scholarship programme. We are currently working with them on a proposal to diversify their activities, increasing the resources at their disposal with which they can provide for and support more children - watch this space!

Aside from the group's fantastic work to support and care for their children, 18 of their children are on our scholarship programme. So, through the payment of school fees and materials, the creation of small businesses for guardians and medical and food assistance, provides both the child and the child's household with a pathway out of poverty and into a brighter future. Their local sports club, Bidii Young Stars, also participatee in our sports and health education programme, giving the children the opportunity to meet, play and learn with children from other rural communities and, above all, have some fun!
