WVP Kenya

agola women's group

The agola women's group is the oldest registered community organisation we work with. They have been supporting children and making a difference in their community since 1996.
Founded: 1996
No. of members: 30
No of children supported by WVP Kenya: 62
District: Bondo
Not only that, but the agola women's group comprises some of the most energetic women you're ever likely to meet. For years the group had been growing maize and millet in order to generate some income to support the vulnerable children living within their community. In July 2008, following training workshops facilitated by WVP Kenya, agola submitted a proposal to us requesting 62 goats - one for each of the children they were supporting at the time - and an oxen and plough set to be used to plough the fields of the group and community members. We are also taking a large number of children from the area through primary, secondary or polytechnic education, and the community's local sports teams - Ndira Youth - are regular participants in our rural sports and health education programme.

Back in 2009, they won the boys volleyball tournament at our 3-day sports bonanza - no mean feat consider the number of teams involved. Recently, in August 2009, in partnership with WVP Kenya, the group opened up their very own shop from which they are selling paraffin and cooking oil - two sought after commodities previously unavailable in their local community; the children benefit, the community benefits. How perfect is that.
